This elephant was the matriarch and had been almost worked to death by her previous owner before the fantastic people at the center, headed up by Lek, purchased her with proceeds from donations. She was purchased, not to give tourists rides or make painting with her trunk but so she could live out her days as nature intended. We were able to feed the younger elephants, wash them in the river with brushes and spend the day learning about the sad reality that the once revered elephant, a symbol of the country, is now simply treated as a beast of burden. However, education and the success of the elephant nature park are starting to make inroads to positive change. Should you visit northern Thailand, you would be doing yourself a disservice to miss out on this raw and rare opportunity.
