  1. Context: Once again, the Chanel Mobile Art in Central Park. I found this angle interesting because it really shows the materiality within the pavilion. All those panels are custom sized and done with such perfection. And they reflect the lighted path around it.

  3. Hi all,
This post has nothing to do with these particular photos, but everything to do with the power of photography. I just finished watching "Born into Brothels", which won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Documentary. A New York-based photographer lived in the red-light district of Calcutta & started teaching the children of prostitutes how to take pictures. Their talent is incredible. She eventually helped some of them get an education so they could escape their fate of poverty & prostitution, & one of them has just been accepted to Tisch School of the Arts (NYU). You can buy his photos to help him raise money on the website. Also, you can buy the dvd -- a powerful film -- and read about other related projects. http://www.kids-with-cameras.org/bornintobrothels/

I kept thinking about how both the film & the kids' photos were so often beautifully composed, gorgeously colourful shots of the most back-breaking, disgusting living conditions. Can a shot of something horrible be beautiful? (Yes, I'd say.) Saw the same thing when I looked at Annie Liebowitz's photos of her dying partner and father in her big show now at National Portrait Gallery, London, a week ago.

  4. JW, I don't think I've seen the whole documentary, but I saw a story about the kids and their photos on TV. It's incredible.
