I have visited the southeastern portion of Turkey twice now (18 years ago and 6 years ago), and I am always amazed by the fortitude of the people that live there. It is a region of the country that is rugged landscape, harsh environment, and obviously different from Istanbul (in that it is not supported as well with infrastructure, social services, etc.); yet, the people persevere. I highly recommend that portion of Turkey if you ever travel there.
