    This is Santa Maria Della Scalla in Siena, an ancient hospice opposite the Duomo in the centre of the city. It is believed to be Europe's oldest public hospital; the sick and needy have been cared for at Santa Maria since the 800s. Most of its patients were pilgrims and travellers along Western Europe's great religious route, the via Francigena, towards Rome. The hospital is now a museum.
