great textures, peter... was this with a longish zoom or were you close to the elephant?
ReplyDeletesofia, love the shot for the emotions evoked knowing that sunset pacific coast of mexico means mexican music, lime in my beer, a plate of garlic shrimp, and best of all, my toes in the lovely, soft Ixtapa sand...
ReplyDeleteThat elephant eye is a fantastic shot.
ReplyDeletesofi - Too many memories of those sunsets. I agree with mr. priebe, I miss the music, the sand, the food (el guacamole de Isa!), the drinks and good times with good people.
Context: Our trip to a rescue centre for abused and neglected elephants was the most moving experience of many in our three-week trip throughout Thailand. This elephant was the matriarch and had been almost worked to death by her previous owner before the fantastic people at the center, headed up by Lek, purchased her with proceeds from donations. She was purchased, not to give tourists rides or make painting with her trunk but so she could live out her days as nature intended. We were able to feed the younger elephants, wash them in the river with brushes and spend the day learning about the sad reality that the once revered elephant, a symbol of the country, is now simply treated as a beast of burden. However, education and the success of the elephant nature park are starting to make inroads to positive change. Should you visit northern Thailand, you would be doing yourself a disservice to miss out on this raw and rare opportunity. For more information see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elephant_Nature_Park
ReplyDeleteGreat elephant picture! Very lovely- I can almost feel her sorrow.
ReplyDeleteApril, you leave such great comments. Thanks from all of us.
ReplyDeleteJay - very close, my right hand was on her shoulder...
ReplyDeleteThe Elephant Nature Park website was not uploading when I posted my context comment, that is why I used the wiki page. Now their site is back up again and so I'd like to share it with you.
